Kang Dabida/Chapter3 1st draft/ Tue34

What kinds of image pop up in your mind, when you hear the word 'artist'? It's whether a highly fashionable man or a man away from secular life. This is a story about my brother whose image is much closer to the latter. He is now 28-year-old. He is a tall skinny man. He has a pretty long hair that comes near to the shoulder which he sometimes he ponytails. He walks with his shoulder crooked a bit, swinging his long arms in the air, giving off a stingy smoke smell. I could notice him in 10 meters only with the smell. He is a bit of a freak artist.

He had been a good obedient kid until high school. One day he talked to my mother that he wanted to study art. He actually had a sense of art since he was young. Majoring in art not only costs considerably amount of money, but it does not also guarantee a promising future unless he is a brilliant genius. It took a couple of days to persuade my mother. She allowed him to do so in the end.

After graduating high school, he got admission to Jung-ang University, which was pretty a fine one, so to say. Spending a semester there, he figured out that it wasn't the right place for him to pursue his future with. The highest standing university in art in Seoul is Hong-ik University. For that matter, he dropped out Jung-ang University and studied half a year for Hong-ik. Dropping out must been a hard decision, which meant there's nowhere to go back even if he fails to go to where he aspires. Leaving no options behind but to study hard really impressed me in a way. This revealed his persistent attitude toward life 'to achieve what he desires to, no matter how much it takes'.

Although he could not make it to Hong-ik, he entered Korea University. Entering there, he seemed to do a lot of things. He had done different kinds of part time jobs from teaching young children art to cleaning a coffee shop at dawn. In terms of his works, they are really both eccentric and grotesque. Once I got to see his filmed work from a computer. His head is gotten covered with a plastic bag, and he walks all places with it: in the bus, on the escalator, on the street, on the bridge, passing by all people. This short film is titled 'dumbness'. He said "I wanted to portrait how the world and people are. We all cover our eyes and ears with something else and try not to see each other." He once had a chance to hold an exhibition sponsored by some institute. I still remember how grotesque and gloomy it was for a normal person like me.

He still is working hard to deliver his view of life into his work in a different and unique way. And I'm watching his works developed as getting older together with him.

    1. Write one sentence to sum up what this person is like.
A unique, hard-working man who pursuits his own life.

    2. List three details from the essay that support your sentence in step 1.
    - He has a pretty long hair that comes near to the shoulder which he sometimes he ponytails.
    - Leaving no options behind but to study hard really impressed me in a way.
    - He had done different kinds of part time jobs from teaching young children art to cleaning a coffee shop at dawn.

    3. Put a check next to each of the methods below (a-d) that the writer uses to reveal the person's character. For each method that you checked, give one example from the essay. (Most essays will probably not use all four methods.)
    - What the person looks like
'He is a tall skinny man. He has a pretty long hair that comes near to the shoulder which he sometimes he ponytails.'
    -What the person says
"I wanted to portrait how the world and people are. We all cover our eyes and ears with something else and try not to see each other."
    -What the person does
'He had done different kinds of part time jobs from teaching young children art to cleaning a coffee shop at dawn.'

    4. Were there any things in this essay that you did not understand? If so, what were they?
I don't think there are. Your writing was very simple and easy to read.

    5. Why do you think the writer chose to describe this particular person?
I think you're very impressed with his way of life. And I was, too. It must have been a hard decision for him to leave school and study again. Also, he is your brother, which makes it easier to describe because you know him well. Plus, he is very unique and different from others judging from his appearance and acts, which is worth writing to amuse people and also attract their attention.

    6. Write one or two questions about the person described in this essay that you would like the writer to answer in the next draft.
    - Why did he choose to study art? What was the motivation?

    A Hungry Artist

What kinds of image pop up in your mind, when you hear the word ‘artist’? It’s whether a high-fashioned one or a person away from the secular life. This is a story about my brother who is much closer to the latter. He is now 28-year-old. He is a tall skinny man. He has pretty long hairs that come near to the shoulder which he sometimes ponytail. He wears rag-like clothes, few of which have some indelible drops of paints on. He walks with his back crooked and shoulder drooped, swinging his long arms back and forth. Oh, there is undetectable thing when mentioning him, the cigarette. When he passes by, it’s like all the air is being covered by his stunk cigar smell. My first word to him is always, “Err! Smelly cigar!” I still don’t understand why many of high-school friends used to have crush on him. He is truly a freak one from my family.

He had been a good obedient kid to my parents until high school. One day he talked to my mother that he wanted to study art. Majoring in art not only costs a considerable amount of money, but it does not necessarily guarantee a promising future unless he is a brilliant genius. It took a couple of days to persuade my mother. She allowed him to do so in the end. My mother once told me that she knew it was coming already, because he had shown such a talent in art since young. The greatest motivation must have been my mom’s sending him fine-arts-kindergarten. He might have tasted the pleasure of art, even before correcting his Korean grammar.

After graduating high school, he got admission to Jung-Ang University, which was one of prestigious universities in Korea, so to say. Spending a semester there, he figured out that it wasn’t the right place for him to pursue his future with. The highest standing university in art in Seoul is Hong-Ik University. For that matter, he dropped out Jung-Ang University and studied half a year for Hong-Ik. Dropping out must have been a hard decision, which meant there’s nowhere to go back even if he fails. Leaving no options behind but to study hard really impressed me in a way. This revealed his persistent attitude toward life ‘to achieve what he desires to, no matter how much it takes’.

Although he could not make it to Hong-Ik, he entered Korea University. Entering there, he seemed to do a lot of things. He had done different kinds of part time jobs from teaching young children art and working as an assistance wedding photographer to cleaning a coffee shop at dawn. Let me talk about his works. Once I got to see his filmed work from a computer by chance. It was eccentric and grotesque. What he did on the film was this; he covers his head with a big white plastic bag, and films himself in random places; from the bus, the escalator, the street, the bridge, to subway station, passing by all people who are looking at him strange and weird . This short film is titled ‘dumbness’. He shortly said “It’s like how people and we are nowadays. We all stuff our eyes and ears with something else, ignore things that might bother them and finally become dumb.”

Most of his works are like the ‘dumbness’ but way much grotesque and gloomy. He does not go after materialism, maybe that’s why he despises Andy Warho. He used to tell me “This society sucks, we all have to do something to change it, even starting from trivial steps. If you tell me to let it be the way it is because there’s nothing we can do- that’s why it doesn’t change, our minds are all set, it really sucks.” And I still remember his advice, “You also have to find your own way of viewing the life, you know what I mean? You really need to find what your color is first.” I’m still working on to figure out what my color really is. And he is also working hard to deliver his view of life into his work in a different and unique way. And I’m watching his works developed as getting older together with him.
