Yoo Hongsang/Bio info /Tue 11 a.m.

1. Think of a well-known person, living or dead, whom you would like to learn more about. Check with your teacher to be sure your choice is appropriate.

I chose Namba Tomoko, the CEO of the Japanese mobile game company, DeNA.

2. Type the person's name into your preferred Web browser.

Originally I searched for her information only in Naver. This time I typed her name in Google.

3. Choose two or three Web sites that seem helpful and read through the information you find.

I used google, Naver, and Wikipedia.

4. Print out a picture of the person and find answers to the following questions:

a. When and where was the person born? How would you describe the person's childhood or early life?

-  Namba Tomoko was born in 1962.Actually, there are not many things to be known about her childhood. Her father seemed to be conservative. Probably, this might have motivated her to live more independent life and led her to be the CEO. She majored in English Literature in Tsuda Women's University.

b. What accomplishment or event caused this person to become famous?

-  Actually, she started her career as a business consultant in Mckinsey, which is the most famous consulting firm in the world. After 2 years in Mckinsey, she entered Harvard Business School for MBA. And after getting back from America, she came back to Mckinsey to be the principal at last. And in 1999, she founded a company DeNA. In Japan, there are not many women who have MBA degrees or is one of the board members, or even CEO. However, Namba Tomoko has all of them. It is very rare, and just this fact itself made her conspicuous.

c. What was one thing you learned about this person that surprised you?

-  She is a very smart person with MBA degree, and a decent job. Probably, it is to safe to say that she has a big ambition. And probably,I think that is true. However, in 2011, she resigned her CEO because his husband got sick so she felt responsible to take care of him. I can't believe this even now. DeNA is not that famous in Korea, but it is a very well-know company in Japan, loved by many people. This ambition woman top her priority on her family rather than her dream or ambition. I learned that how precious and important our family are.

d. If you were asked to write a brief biography of this person, what three personal characteristics would you emphasize?

-  Namba Tomoko is a very confident woman. Most of the CEOs are surely confident, but Namba is special in that she always puts emphasis on the venture spirit even after her company got big. Her confidence can also be shown in her remark such as ''It is time for Nintendo and Sony to retire.''

Also, she is a very smart person. She worked as a business consultant in Mckinsey Japan. Mckinsey is the world's most famous consulting firm, so they always recruit the smartest and most competent applicants. Furthermore, she finished her MBA course in Harvard Business School. This is just enough to show how smart she is.

Last but not least, she values family. In 2011, she resigned her position as CEO because she felt responsible to take care of her husband, who had been sick in bed. It was very surprising because she was ambitious. In sum, she is a confident and smart woman with a warm heart.
