Yoo Hongsang/Exercise 2 (pg. 11)/Tuesday 3,4

1.     What are your earliest memories to writing?

As far as I remember, the picture diary I wrote from the first grade in elementary school was the earliest memory to writing. Since I did not know many words, my mom always helped me with writing. I do not remember if I loved writing at that time, but I definitely love the precious time I had with my mom. That is, my earliest memory to wiring is priceless and pleasant.

2.  Write about a pleasant experience you have had with writing. How did this experience affect your attitude toward writing?

When I was an elementary school student, I had to keep a diary on a daily basis. At first, it was not fun, and I only did it not to be scolded. One day, when I was the fourth grade, my teacher read my diary to all class as the best sample diary. I think it was my first pleasant experience. And after that, I would remain in the class even after class to write, and I think this led me to have more confidence in writing.

3.  Write about a bad experience you have had with writing. How did this experience affect your attitude toward writing?

When I was a middle school student, I took part in the English writing contest in school. And I was chosen the best among all. I was so happy, and I think I was a little bit arrogant. And I had a chance to take part in bigger contest in scale. I do not remember the theme at that time clearly, but anyway I was not able to keep writing on, and had some troubles with grammar and vocabulary. I ended up turning in the poor paper. I was so ashamed of myself. I lost some confidence in writing, but also this was a good chance for me to learn to be humble.

4.  How do you feel about writing in your first language compared to writing in English?

Of course, I feel more comfortable when I write in my mother tongue. The only thing I should concentrate on is its content, not grammar or vocabulary. In contrary, when I write in English, I always have to give a ceaseless care about those things. Korean has some difficult points in grammar, but I am the native speaker, and I think I am strong at some rules compared to others. So, I can focus on the contents solely rather than the subsidiary stuffs.

5.  Describe how writing was taught in your previous schooling by answering some or all of these questions: How often did you have to write? What kinds of topics did you write about? Give one or two examples. What kinds of comments did the teacher make on your papers? What was considered more important: the content of your papers(your ideas) or correct grammar and spelling (how you expressed them)?

I think I wrote at least twice a week. Each time, there was some specific topic in the textbook, so the range of topics was broad. And I was able to choose my own topic, too. For example, the topic was such as 'give your opinions about the unification of North and South Korea'. The comments I got from teacher was always good because I was superior to other classmates. The teacher corrected the errors I made grammatically. Still the content of the paper was considered more important.

6.  When you are writing a paper for a class, do you try to please yourself or the teacher? Explain.

I try to please both because the writing that I feel satisfied with is likely to satisfy the teacher. However, since the paper for a class is always reflected in credits, I think I try to please the teacher more, if I have to choose one. I try to put myself in the teacher's shoes and try to make a revision on my first and second draft. The writing that pleases the teacher also pleases me, too.

7.  Have you ever done any writing for yourself only – letter to friends or relatives, journals, diaries, poems? If so, explain how this writing was different from the writing you did for school assignments.

Yes. It is usually diary. I do not keep the diary on a regular basis, but sometimes if I have special events, or have a good idea, I write diary in my homepage so that every one can look at it. This is about my daily stuff, so I can say this is the writing for me. This kind of writing is different from the school assignment in that I do not have to feel pressure and it is fun. Sometimes, the school assignment is also fun, but it is not for the pleasure. It can be useful in the long run, but still I tend to feel pressure. In contrary, if I post some funny or good writings in my homepage, my friends leave the complimentary comments about my writing, which makes me feel good.

I am also the one who first uses this kind of blogger. Though the fact that I am not so good at this blogger could be a small thing, it gives me a real headache. I dont know how to handle this blogger and how to erase what I posted. so how stupid I might seem! But you answered all the questions. It could be beneficial to you anyway. As the proverb goes, Genius displays itself even in childhood, I find that your writing is very good in contents, grammar, the selection and arrangements. If you hone your skills in writing more and more, I bet you would be an excellent English writer.
