    Three Q&As

Write about a pleasant experience you have had with writing. How did this experience affect your attitude toward writing?
When I was young maybe at 10 or 11, I had a chance to apply for a book report contest. Whether it was selective or mandatory I cannot remember right now. But anyway I wrote. And it was one organized by City Education Committee. so if I had won the prize, it would have been a great pleasure and honor. But those days I didn’t know about the fact because I was so young, childlike, and naive. When I first wrote the book report, I didn’t have the slightest knowledge of the book report. I hadn’t never learned about the book report before. But anyway I had to write. Just at the right time, in my house, there was a book containing many good book reports written by others. so I referred to it. I clipped more than half of the contents here and there and then wrote them down into my paper. But surprisingly I was included into three prizes. If I had already known that I had a natural ability to write well and plagiarize, I would become a good writer nowadays. So this kind of experience let me think I can also write.

How do you feel about writing in your first language compared to writing in English?
Of course, I feel more comfortable writing in my first language than writing in English. This is because I am a Korean from birth. When I write in Korean, I can describe more detailedly, easily and automatically, but when I write in English, I should almost always look up the words that I don’t know and am not sure of. Sometimes writing in English is fun, but other times it could be some annoyance. I find myself spending so many hours when I write in English sitting at a desk. The day almost passes for writing. It is a highly time-consuming process.

When you are writing a paper for a class, do you try to please yourself or the teacher? Explain.
Though I am not so good at writing, if I try my best, it could be ideal. For example, you want to manage a restaurant selling food. You must choose which kind of food, flavor, taste and so on you would sell. Your focus would be only taste no matter how much and how bad artificial flavor enhancer you put in at the cost of good health of people for your benefits in the short run. Alternatively, your focus would be good health of people. you will always calculate calories and the right amount of seasonings customers take. You will seriously consider whether seasonings are right or wrong at the cost of taste for the benefits of customers in the long run. At first, you feel deprived and don’t feel profitable by this approach because people think otherwise. But after some time, not only will others understand and recognize your painstaking efforts, but you also make a fortune. I think writing is also the same as selling food. If I try to hold true to my inner voice, then people would be pleased including myself, the teacher and others.
