                                               My Eden

When it is in hot summer, there is one person that I always remember. Though it has been 10 years that I could not see him, somewhere from my brain search automatically and pull out the image. My grandfather, I met him when I was in middle school. When my family went to the airport to pick him up, I was wondering how he looked like. When I first met him, I was shy and awkward to have a conversation so I just observed him. He had a short gray colored hair, not fat nor thin, and with a height of about 177 cm. he had wrinkles only around his eyes and, which showed the impression that he liked to smile with his eyes a lot. That was the first observation I got.

Then as I stayed with my grandfather for many years I started to see other characteristic of him. He was usually quiet, especially during the meal and listening to classic music. He always had his time to enjoy the tea time after the meal. While taking a tea, he had a smile as if he did not want any interruption. His gesture was always gentle but in another word he was slow. Whenever we go out for a trip, he was a last person to step out from the house.

On certain situation my grandfather's characteristic changed. When He and I go out for a fishing, he was faster than usual movements. Normally he walked slowly to enjoy looking around the environment, but the day of fishing that was not acceptable. He was really a cautious man in the house or out, but he totally changes when he is out for fishing. He sometimes dived into the sea to bring out the fish that he or I got by the rod which we could not pull out from the water. He was very passionate on fishing. Second situation was when I played soccer. After the match against other school, he talks a lot to coach me what I should have done meanwhile he doesn't speak to me frequently at home. During this kind of conversation he used big gestures to let me know clearly. He once said "kick the ball without thinking just let go what your body wants". Well, honestly that was something that he should have told to someone who is training for several years, not like me playing soccer only in recess time with friends and sometimes on Friday match. It quickly reminded me that he also watched a soccer game frequently. He loved soccer and maybe he thought I could become one of the player he used to see at the television. Lastly, he changed when he drove the car. I hardly saw him using abusive languages even when he got angry until his face turning to red. Whenever he hold the handle of the car, this man became aggressive and emotionally sensitive. At first, it was funny to see him these kind of changes but later it was a horror to see his dual personality.

My grandfather was my greatest advisor, friend and person whom I loved most. He was always with me to take care and loved to listen, even though it was not that interesting. I loved his smiles, which made me peaceful and relax. He was my refuge.

Non-possession

There is a man. No. There was a man. He was a Buddhist monk. And he was a bestselling author at the same time. Many people, including me, have loved him and deeply respected him. He is Beop Jeong, the most respected and beloved Buddhist leader in Korea.

He was born in Haenam in 1932 which is famous for its nickname, "the end of the South Korea". His real name is Park Jae-Cheol. He, of course, was not a monk at first. When he was 20, The Korean War(1950~1953) broke out, which made him think intensely about life and death. When he was a junior in college, he eventually left his school in search of the truth.

He became a monk at Songgwang Temple in Suncheon. Unlike most monks, he participated in society. He raised his voice about things that he thought were wrong and not right. And he also tried to deliver Buddhist teachings to many people in a way that is easier and more understandable.

Not only as a monk, but also as a writer he was very exceptional. Among them, his first book, "Non-possession"(or "Musoyu") particularly made him famous and beloved. In this book, he urged us to live a life where we are not ruled by material things. Non-possession does not mean you should not possess anything, it has something to do with not possessing unnecessary things.

The more he became popular, however, the more he got tired. He wanted to get away from the spotlight. That's why he moved to a small cottage. He lived alone there and practiced himself what he told people to do.

I remember my first time I saw him. I didn't know how he looks until then. Whenever I hated to study, but had to do something that looks productive I used to go to the library. There, I met him and his book.

The first word that stroke me was overwhelm. I literally felt like I was overwhelmed by him. To be more specific, his eyes did impress me. We, Korean, often say like "Your eyes are alive!". I came to understand what exactly it means seeing him. His eyes are alive. Imagine elderly we usually see around us. Imagine there eyes. And then, look at his picture again. His eyes are full of the sharpness and the brightness. That's the difference.

He passed away at the age of 78. He had suffered from lung cancer for several years. Before he died, he expressed his wish that his books should not be published anymore. In accordance with his last will, all publishers decided to discontinue sales of his books. I remember many people rushing into buying his books in case of their being out of print.

Even thought he left this world, all his teaching will last forever.

Kang Soo-jin is the almost exclusively world class ballerina who was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1967. She made her way into dance from her early childhood. She entered Sunhwa arts middle school and majored Korean traditional dance and minored ballet. Soon, it turned out that she had a great talent in ballet which made Kang change her major into ballet. When the principle of the Monaco royal ballet school paid a visit to Sunhwa arts middle school Kang was a third grader and her great performance fascinated the principle. The principle supported her to study in the Monaco royal ballet school and became the world top class ballerina since then. She received a lot of awards from the Best Female Ballerina Award at the Prix Benois de la Danse to the John Cranko Award. She is truly a hard worker, in her case, dancer. Once Kang said, if the 100% is given amount of practice a day, she always did more than 100%. Kang's talent she was born with, of course, was one thing, but her magnificent efforts she poured to build her career was the crucial factor that brought her into where she is now. Her gnarly feet tell us how hard she has been working in her profession. Kang was the symbolic embodiment of hard working genius.

Choe Kyung-Yo/Bio Info/Tue 3,4

I chose Kang Yong-seok, a 45-year-old former lawmaker. He is now playing an active part in many TV shows as a popular broadcaster and as a lawyer at the same time. He is a person who has been living a life full of ups and downs, which is the reason I chose him.

A. He was born on November 3, 1969, in Seoul. The one word that describes his early life is "needy". He went through a very hard early time, because his father spent most his time in prison when he was younger. It means his father was not a person who fed the family. For this reason, he even entered a quiz contest for earning his college tuition for himself back in high school.

B. What accomplishment or event caused this person to become famous?

There are so many. Most of them, however, made him famous in a bad sense. Among them, particularly a lot of accusations that he made against celebrities are the main events, which even attached a nickname, "A man of accusation" to him.

C. What was one thing you learned about this person that surprised you?

He never gave up although his external factors, such as his father or poor surroundings, incessantly discouraged him. Most people, including me, easily ascribe their failure to their parents, environment surrounding them or other things, not themselves. If I had not been appointed a judge, because of my father's imprisonment, I would have blamed him very much and even lived recklessly complaining him in my whole life. But he didn't. He didn't give up his life. He didn't make his external environments discourage him. And he didn't waste his time blaming somebody. Instead, he became a competent lawyer and later he even became a legislator.

His life gave me a lesson that you should not waste your valuable time complaining and blaming.

D. If I were asked to write a brief biography of him, I would emphasized three personal characteristics, positive, tenacious and undaunted.

Woody Allen

 http://image.cine21.com/resize/cine21/person/2005/0215/P0000021_pl48905%5bW578-%5d.jpg?W180

I wanted to know more about Woody Allen who is a world-famous movie director. I got to know him by his recent movie "Midnight in Paris" and became a fan of his movies. And lately, I saw a movie "Blue Jasmine" which is his latest film.

a.     When and where was the person born?  How would you describe the person's childhood or early life?

Allen was born Allan Stewart Konigsberg in The Bronz and raised in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Nettie, a bookkeeper at her family's delicatessen, and Martin Konigsberg, a jewelry engraver and waiter.

His childhood was not particularly happy: his parents did not get along, and he had a rocky relationship with his stern, temperamental mother. Allen spoke German quite a bit in his early years. He would later joke that when he was young he was often sent to inter-faith Summer camps, where he "was savagely beaten by children of all races and creeds."  While attending Hebrew school for eight years, he went to Public School 99 (now The Isaac Asimov School for Science and Literature) and to Midwood High School. At that time, he lived in an apartment at 968 East 14th Street.Unlike his comic persona, he was more interested in baseball than school and his strong arms ensured he was first to be picked for a team. He impressed students with his extraordinary talent at card and magic tricks. To raise money he wrote jokes (or "gags") for agent David O. Alber, who sold them to newspaper columnists. According to Allen, his first published joke read: "Woody Allen says he ate at a restaurant that had O.P.S. prices – over people's salaries."

He began to call himself Woody Allen. At the age of 17, he legally changed his name to Heywood Allen. He was then earning more than both parents combined.

After high school, he attended New York University, studying communication and film. He later briefly attended City College of New York and soon flunked out. Later, he learned via self-study rather than in the classroom. He eventually taught at The New School. He also studied with writing teacher Lajos Egri.

b.     What accomplishment or event caused the person to become famous?

He started to be famous from one of his popular movie Annie Hall and it won 4 academy awards.

           c.     What was one thing you learned about this person that surprised you?

His romance with Soon-Yi Previn was quite impressive and surprising.

"After ending his relationship with Mia Farrow in 1992, Allen continued his relationship with Soon-Yi Previn. Though Allen never married Mia Farrow and was not Previn's legal stepfather, the relationship between Allen and Previn has often been referred to as a stepfather involved romantically with his stepdaughter because she was adopted and legally Farrow's daughter and Allen's son's sister. In 1991, New York Times opined on Allen's family life: "Few married couples seem more married. They are constantly in touch with each other, and not many fathers spend as much time with their children as Allen does."

In 1991, when the relationship began, Allen was 56 and Previn around 19. Asked whether their age difference was conducive to "a healthy, equal relationship," Allen said equality is not necessarily a requirement in a relationship and "The heart wants what it wants. There's no logic to those things. You meet someone and you fall in love, and that's that." The couple married in 1997."

  d.     If you were asked to write a brief biography of this person, what three personal characteristics would you emphasize

       1.     How his personal experience and personality affected to characteristics of his works.

2.     Scandal with his ex-wives and Soon-Yi Previn

3.     What he wants to express in his films
