Kim Kap Whan in EIT / 201003958 / for Oct 8th, Tues 11 A.M. / description

No mercy!

He is a middle aged man, not so tall. He is characterized by a white gown and dark-colored pants. He doesn't wear glasses. I am rested into a reclining chair, waiting for my turn hopelessly and helplessly and thinking whether treatment would be painful or not. Finally, he comes to me and looks around into my mouth curiously with sharp eyes like eagles as if he thinks it's no big deal, finding out decayed parts or other problems. Very close, I can observe his face carefully. His face feels a little white, pale, and expressionless. Though I think I opened my mouth fully, he still says, "open more" in a military tone, and then drills my tooth mercilessly, drrrrrrrrrr.

When I first entered the clinic, I felt a warm atmosphere. There was relaxing music such as classical music. The interior was decorated mainly with white color. The sofas gave me a sense of stability. When we had eye contact, he made a bow to me, saying "안녕하세요". I didn't think he needed to do so because he was older than me, but he did. Also, his voice felt friendly and familiar.

There are one male and some female coworkers. I don't know if they are nurses or doctors. Anyway, he gives orders to them. He says, "Did the false tooth of the patient be molded well?", then the other male coworker responds, "Yes, it was". If he gestures with hand, the female coworker gives him something. They seem professional. When there are so many patients, he is always on the move, almost saying nothing and focusing on what he is doing, but when there aren't many patients, he tells a light joke with them, saying very routine things. He says, " What are you going to eat tonight?" Miraculously and unknowingly, I also enjoy their jokes. When I am done with my treatment, he says, "You can go".

<“Only once look before you leap!”>

I want to describe my second aunt. She is 55 year-old. She is very tall about 170 cm. and too skinny. She has long, straight hair. She always ties her hair back. Her eyes which are always prominent are too dark, brooding. The eyes are surrounded by heavy dark circles. Whole face of her are all wrinkled up.

Furthermore, I have never seen her smile even though we are so close that we have met over 50 times a year. Whenever we meet, she always wrinkled his brow deeply, thinking something. Also the eyes are gazing into the floor and she was often numb for a while. Being lost in thought, she usually bites her mouth.

“Why does my second sister-in-law care of everything? I know we should remember the proverb, ”Look before you leap”. But I think she is too much looking.”

My mother often said to me.

Whenever she speaks, she hesitates in speaking and repeats some words, over and over again. Also, she usually murmurs under her breath silently so it is so hard to catch out what the meaning of her words is.

If my aunt is walking on the sidewalk, she look around and then, she start to take a step forward.

 “We..ll… If.. If an earthquake happens,…  Suddenly, a car… can… can… rush to the sidewalk… then what should we… d..o? And if… if… if…..”

Whenever she mutters these things to herself, her husband who is my uncle always goes ahead without any response.

When I was 3th grade in elementary school, my family was supposed to go trip to Canada with the uncle’s family. Buy the way, just as was expected, the aunt made a phone call to my house at all hours. The phone call had been started 3 months ago from the day that we were scheduled to leave.

‘Hmm, The Canada is… is…. now summer day. But when…. we get there……there… will it start… to get a little…. cold, especially at night?

After she said like this, she rang back to my father immediately 10 minutes later.

“Do… Do… you think is it ok.. ok… that I.. I… just exchange 500 만원 into dollars? Isn’t I short of.. of… cash?”

She just lived with her cell phone to ask a number of borrow cares. My father who always answered the phone said that I would go first to hospital to check my ear before I went to the trip. After answering a bunch of calls from my aunt, he was little deaf of the left ear of him. So my father really went first to hospital.

When the day on which we were scheduled to leave came, as she had done in the past, she told my father that she did not go.

“Sorry, I can not go to trip… never…. I had the dream in which the plane we… we… were boarding was crashed. And.. and..If not… I may lost in that country… and… and…. It… it… may be easy to be robbed of.. of… my wallet by a pickpocket….”

Finally, we went to trip in Los Angeles except my aunt. While we were traveling in the area, she persistently called to her husband and she worried about him. However, we had a pleasant trip without any problems. The plane never shook, we never lost, and also we never met pickpockets at there.

I am sure that the most terrible proverb to my aunt is “Look before you leap“. So I really want to change this proverb for her.

“Only once look before you leap!”

<Task3.2. Practice>

1.I go to the Incheon Grand Park. In that park, I saw the playground in which children were playing.

2. I selected one person who was having a swing. I guessed that his age was about 10 year-old, and he was much shorter than his friends. Also he was chubby.

    <Don’t Make a Hasty Judgment>

3.  When I selected one person to do this assignment, one boy stood out from the rest of crowds. I thought that his age was about 10 year-old. He was much shorter than any other child in the park and also, he was very chubby. He wore a blue stripe t-shirt and a long blue jean which were all wrinkled up and also very dirty. So I believed that he had no confidence and he was very shy guy because of his appearance.

However, his action was really different from his appearance. He always led the group of children.

“Come on! We have to have a swing in order. So line up right now!”

After he said to everybody, all children in that park started to ling up in a row to have a swing! Furthermore, he had so cheerful that I only concentrated on his movement. And the most notable thing that I impressed by was his facial expression. He never lost his smile for fifteen minutes when I observed him carefully. Even when he got hit by one friend on a swing very severely, he was always smiling.

“That’s OK. You just made mistake. So you don’t have to apologize to me.”

Saying like this, he rather patted the boy who hit him on the back. What an adult behavior he did! After I heard this mention I was very shocked. Also, I realized how I was dependent on people’s appearance. I made pre-judgment on his personality just seeing his surface things before knowing his real value.

My beloving friend.

This is a story of my friend who I met in the Army. His name is Kim Donghyun. He had coffee like colored skin. His nickname I made is "Mowgli" in the Jungle Book story. I always made fun of him saying "I really want to eat chocolate! Can I have some from your skin?" and every time I made a joke like that he just laugh saying "It must be bitter because I am took dark!”

Because he and I assigned in a same room in an army training center, we had many chances to have a conversation with each other. The army forces us to sleep at 11 o'clock but we did not follow the regulation because we had so many things to talk about. From the conversation, I noticed that he and I had many things in common. And that is why we had a great friendship.

First of all, he is hard worker. Many guys in the army try to avoid military training. But, he always tried his best. To be more specific, we had to run 2 miles every morning without shirts on in the winter time. Many trainees go to see doctor or pretend to have a bad cold. Instead of it, he was always at the front of the row. Also, he successfully finished his given task even if it takes a lot of efforts and times. That is, he spared no efforts on doing assigned tasks. It is not much to call him as "perfectionist".

Secondly, he knows how to treat others well. For example, I knew he had a high level of self-confidence just like me. From my past experiences, I found that it is pretty easy to have a conflict unless one is willing to lose. In our relationship, I was always try to be a winner, and my friend always willing to be a loser saying "If you kept insisting you are right, I will stand on your side". The important thing is that I was wrong. That is why I do care about him more than others. Even if his self-confident personality does not want to lose, he just chose to lose only because of our relationship. He was cool.

Finally, he likes to travel just like me. And I think it was the core of our relationship. We both like to travel. After we finished our basic training, we were assigned in a different area. He served the military service in Daegu, located in southern part of The Korean peninsula, and I served in Dongducheon, located in Northern part of Korea. So, in the normal situation, we could not see each other’s often, but in fact, I and he went to travel more than six times. We planned leaves in accordance with each others. Our relationship have ripen while we traveling together.

If I have to choose one thing that I got from my military service, I will choose my friend Kim Donghyun without any hesitation. He is that much important for me. I have learned many lifelong lessons from him: how to live life happily, how to spend money wisely, how to take care of others well, what to seek in life and so on. With the help of him, I finally finished my army life well. But above all, the most important thing is that he really does like me. He always says this to me. "I hope our relationship will last forever and hope we go family travel together after we married", "You are the best friend I got", and "Hyeong! I miss you". That is the reason why I cannot help but to "mentally" love him.

"Cuty big bulky man"

I heard loud noises with unfamiliar language. My curiosity made me head over to the sound to notify what is happening. There were some guys using a language I have never heard. Among them, I found a man who has a fine presence. The chair he set on seemed not enough to support his large body. And from the clothes he worn, I could vaguely assume that he came from a country located in Africa. The color of his clothes was orange and there are many animals printed. In my guess, that must be traditional clothes. The animal pattern was not quite harmonious because he looks scary. Not only his bulky body, but also his facial expression makes me think that way. He was frown and looks uncomfortable.

For the first time, I heard some words I could understand. It was "Nam dong sang" which means younger brother in Korean. One of his friend said "That means older brother". It was obvious that the big guy did not agree with that idea at all. He said to his friend that "No no! You were wrong! It means older brother!” He was almost shouting. The mixed voices became louder because of the conflict of the definition of the word. Now I could understand they are studying Korean. I really wanted to interrupt and define the word to finish the argument but I just let them argue. They look so cute in my eyes because their appearance and the content of the argument did not fit at all.

After the argument, they finally chose the big bulky man's opinion. Suddenly he came up to me. He introduced himself to me, and asks the definition of "Nam dong sang". As soon as I let him know the definition, he said "See this? I was right! You guys have to study hard!” At that moment, I noticed his big smile of satisfaction on his face. His bright white tooth was shinning. He looked like a happiest man in the world. He was not scary anymore and even cute and innocent.

Choe Kyung-Yo/Task 3.2/Tue 3,4

I went to a cafe and saw a man there. He was doing something with his laptop. I found him very unique because he was wearing an unforgettable t-shirt. We, Korean, can't forget 2002, the world cup year. I was 10 years old at that time. All students in my school wore the red t-shirt which says "Be the Reds" on it. Even if not wearing it, everyone had it. To this day, I still remember the great cheer for our soccer team. The t-shirt is kind of a reminder to me. And he was wearing it, in 2013. It looked very worn at a glance. We still love that t-shirt, but don't wear anymore. That was not all. He exactly parted his hair in the middle. It made him look like Beethoven. I don't know what he was doing. But it appeared that he was typing something. He typed for a few minutes, and stopped, and started gazing vacantly. He repeated this process. He was also wearing rimless glasses. For these reasons, I formed two hypotheses. First, he might be a graduate student. He might be writing a graduation thesis. Second, he might be a novelist. Many of artists seem like geeks. I often see some people who have their own world and live there, not caring about how other people look at. He seemed like one of them.

Non-possession

There is a man. No. There was a man. He was a Buddhist monk. And he was a bestselling author at the same time. Many people, including me, have loved him and deeply respected him. He is Beop Jeong, the most respected and beloved Buddhist leader in Korea.

He was born in Haenam in 1932 which is famous for its nickname, "the end of the South Korea". His real name is Park JaeCheol. He, of course, was not a monk at first. When he was 20, The Korean War(1950~1953) broke out, which made him think seriously about life and death. When he was a junior in college, he left his school in the end. He left in search of the truth.

He became a monk at Songgwang Temple in Suncheon. But as soon as his book came out, he became very famous. "Nonpossesion", his first book, became a bestseller. However, he got tired of getting spotlight. That's why he moved to a small cottage. He lived alone there and practiced himself what he told people to do.

You might think I am a buddhist. But I am not. I just love him regardless of his religion. It goes back to high school days. You must know how much Suneung gave us a hard time. Not only physically but even mentally. I was just one of those students who prayed every single day that I could escape from this hell or the world would end when I woke up tomorrow.

Whenever I didn't want to study, but had to do something that looked productive, I used to go to the library. There, this book, "non-possession"(or "Musoyu"), captured my attention. I even transcribed it to keep all his teaching in mind. In this book, he asked us to live a life where we are not ruled by material things.

I would like to talk about him more. When I first saw his picture, I felt like being overwhelmed by him. Of his face, the eyes particularly impressed me. We, Korean, often say like "Eyes are alive". I didn't know the exact meaning before. I came to understand what exactly it meant seeing him. His eyes are literally alive. Think of the elderly we usually see around us. Think of there eyes. And then, look at his picture again. You must find the differences,the sharpness and the brightness.

He passed away at the age of 78. He had suffered from lung cancer for several years. Before he died, he expressed his wish that his books should not be published anymore. In accordance with his last will, all publishers decided to discontinue sales of his books. I remember many people rushing into buying his last books at that time.

Even thought he left this world, all his teaching will last forever.
